I didn't watch the Super Bowl this year, because it started at 11:30 pm here, and that is way past my bedtime. But, I've watched a few of the Super Bowl ads on You Tube. One ad which seems to be getting some attention from the media is Audi's "Green Police" ad. Here is the link in case you have missed it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wq58zS4_jvM
Overall, I think the ad is funny. The idea of the "Green Police" going around arresting people for violating the "save the environment" rules doesn't seem all that far-fetched to me. There have been some reports here in the UK of the suggestion that everyone be required to compost their kitchen waste in special containers. Cesar and I are very good about recycling and have no problem with that. We don't own a car and use public transportation to get around, so score one for us for reducing our carbon footprint. But, I absolutely draw the line at letting rotting food accumulate in my kitchen. GROSS!! Every time I see an article about composting, it makes me want to barf. Anyway, the "Green Police" reminded me of how I envision some of the environmental proposals being enforced, and it made me laugh.
What I didn't understand about the ad was that it was for a "green" car. As I was watching it, I assumed it would be for a big gas guzzling vehicle, something that would, in effect, be giving the finger to the people they had just made fun of. Instead, the commercial seems to say, "Look at all of this environmental regulation and how ridiculous it is. Now, please buy our product that feeds into that absurdity." The first half of the commerical and the punch line seem like a dichotomy to me. I think they would have stuck to the theme of the commercial better if Audi had created the same commercial, but at the end had had some awesome sports car zoom past the "Green Police" while the people inside laughed hysterically as they went by.
Anyway, good for Audi for making a "green" car, but I don't think the ad made the point Audi had intended.
