What's wrong with wine and sherry? :-) I thought that was why they call it the "Whiskypelian" Church!

Elizabeth

Nothing is wrong with wine and sherry! I was just bitter about missing out on cookie time. :-)

It is funny how the same religion is so different in a different country. I was surprised at the lack of knowledge about Ash Wednesday. The low attendance at church services also surprised me.

Elizabeth

I agree, it is interesting to see how things are different, but also the same. With the exception of the church I went to on Easter last year, the services are very similar to the Episcopal services in the US.

The low attendance doesn't surprise me too much. I've read that fewer and fewer people are attending church in Europe and the UK. That's one reason why the priests get so excited to see younger people at the services. It's not great for the future of the church when everyone in a congregation is in their 70s and 80s. They need new blood to keep it going for the next generations.

That being said, the lack of knowledge about Ash Wednesday was really shocking to me, to be honest.

I know this is a late comment but I just saw this blog and read with great interest. What you described is what I would expect based on my experience with my family over there. the younger generations seem very proud to proclaim themselves athiests which has always bothered me but I don't push my views on them. I just pray that I can influence them to become believers on their own by not hiding my love & enthusiasm for my faith when I speak with them online or through my Facebook page (since I don't see them on a regular basis). I'm sure it would be difficult being over there and feeling like such a monority surrounded by so many lacking in faith though. The good thing is, at least two people noticed the ash on your head and, although they initially thought it was dirt, I bet they eventually figured out what it actually was. Though it seems like nothing to you now, you planted a seed that may eventually grow into something that will change their life in a wonderful way. So... well done, Betsy. :)

Thanks so much for your thoughts on this Susan. I really appreciate it! :)
